Musicians: how much of your hearing have you already lost? ›

Click the link to test it out. Personally, I can hear up to 19 kHz (although it starts to get a little faint). 20 kHz just gives me a headache, and 21 and 22 are completely inaudible.

Guys, hearing loss is a serious issue, especially if you’re in a marching band, drum corps or indoor line, and especially if you’re a percussionist. If you want to keep playing and listening to music the rest of your life, your ears are probably the most important thing you have. Don’t be “too cool for school” when it comes to earplugs. Get a pair of these, they’re what I have for drum corps. They’re under $20, they’re not custom-fitted, and they’re designed for musicians - they do a great job of not changing the characteristic of the sound, just reducing the volume, so your ability to rehearse effectively isn’t really affected. You might think they make you look dumb, or they aren’t cool, but hearing loss is about as uncool as it gets.

One of my techs posted this link on Facebook. He already can’t hear above 15 kHz, and he’s only 25. After spending so many years around DCI and WGI groups, I’m starting to get tinnitus more and more often lately, and it’s pretty unnerving. A lot of you are way younger than me (young’uns, get off my lawn, etc), and the earlier you can head off hearing loss, the better. Take this seriously.

17KHz is just a ping for me. This is quite shocking considering the fact that I’ve always thought I had good hearing. Oh jeez. Well, I’m done with marching band now, but I still should really take care of my hearing. Thank you so much for whoever posted this.

I can almost not hear 19KHz. Anything beyond 19 is silent :(
